Land upgrades give you more space in the garden to put items in. Both upgrades increase the size of the region of the garden in which players can modify. The borders of the modifiable area of the garden is marked by a white border at the edges. Rocks can be found outside the border, but they disappear after the second land upgrade is obtained. In Viva Piñata the white border disappears after the second land upgrade is given, while in Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise the border after the second land upgrade is given stays and is also marked by a small section of soil that cannot be changed.
The first land upgrade is given by Jardiniero at level 11, or partway through level 3 in Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise. The second and final land upgrade is given at level 21 or partway through level 5 in Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise.
